About the festival
Why Families Remember Ancestors as Winter Begins
The first day of the tenth lunar month is also called Hanyi, or Winter Clothing Day. It arrives with the cold, and its name means “cold clothes.”
Remembering ancestors
Families tend graves and “send winter clothes” — traditionally clothing made of paper, burned as an offering.
Caring for the living
Warm clothes come out for the family, and the stove is readied for winter.
Remembering today
Many families now remember more quietly — a family meal, flowers, or remembering online.

Before You Light a Lamp
Is this a religious service?
No. Qiyuan is a cultural remembrance space inspired by East Asian traditions, open to families of any background. No spiritual efficacy is claimed.
Who can see my lamp?
You choose when you light it. Public Garden shows the names on the hall’s lamp wall. Anonymous Light shows only “Anonymous.” Private Link-Only never appears on the public wall.
When does it start, and how do I cover November 9?
Your lamp begins once Shopify confirms payment, and glows for the time you choose. A 1-day lamp lit on November 9 covers the day; a 7-day lamp lit by November 3 glows through November 9.
Is there a subscription?
No. Each lamp is a single one-time payment, starting at $1.
