On August 26, 2026, a devastating flow of mud, rock and water struck Himalayan communities along the Nepal–Tibet border and the area around Gyirong Port.
Homes, roads, bridges and essential infrastructure were destroyed. Lives were lost. Many people remain missing, while survivors, families and local communities continue to wait for news and assistance.

The Morning the Mountains Changed
In the Himalayan borderlands, mountains shape daily life. Roads follow steep valleys, homes stand close to rivers and journeys pass through high crossings that connect communities on both sides of the border. When mud, rock and floodwater came down, familiar ground changed within moments.
For people far away, the disaster may first appear as a place name, a breaking-news alert or an aerial image. For those living through it, it is the sudden absence of a familiar voice, an unanswered call, a damaged home and a road that no longer leads where it did yesterday.
Rescue teams continue to work through unstable terrain and difficult conditions. Families continue to wait. Communities are grieving while also caring for survivors and beginning the long work of recovery.
Behind Every Number Is a Life
During a large disaster, official figures matter. They help guide rescue work, resources and public understanding. Yet numbers can never contain the whole truth of a life.
Each person had a name known at home, relationships that shaped them, daily habits, plans, worries and people who expected to see them again. Some were local residents. Others may have been working, travelling or passing through. Their stories are different, but none should disappear inside a total.
We may not know every name, and we should not claim a grief that belongs most deeply to families and friends. We can still acknowledge the lives lost with humility and care.
